Oct 17, 2021 11:07 IST | By Editorji News Desk

International Day for the Eradication of Poverty 2021: The Covid-19 pandemic that continues to wreck chaos all across the world has severely hampered the fight against poverty. As per the World Bank Report, the crisis has driven between 88 and 115 million people into poverty. This figure is predicted to have climbed to between 143 and 163 million in 2021.

Observed on 17th October each year, International Day for the Eradication of Poverty aims at creating awareness about the need to eradicate poverty. The day was established on 22nd December 1992 by the United Nations General Assembly.

The theme for the year 2021 is, Building Forward Together: Ending Persistent Poverty, Respecting all People and our Planet. It is important that governments work towards dismantling discriminatory structures that put poverty-stricken people at a disadvantage, and build policies on the legal framework of human rights.
