Drop in exercise could be the cause of pandemic depression: study

Mar 07, 2021 10:54 IST | By Editorji News Desk

A new study has found that there might be a deeper relationship between physical activity and mental health than previously thought.

Research conducted before and during the pandemic revealed the average steps of subjects declined from 10,000 to 4,600 steps per day while rates of depression soared from 32 per cent to 61 per cent. Additionally, the study found that short-term restoration of exercise does not meaningfully improve mental well-being.

A co-author from the study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science said, 'the results clearly show that those who maintained physical exercise throughout the pandemic were the most resilient and least likely to suffer from depression.'
