In-Depth: Taliban Nightmare in Afghanistan, BJP dream run in UP 2022?

Aug 25, 2021 12:03 IST | By Editorji News Desk

Taliban takeover in Afghanistan has sparked fears and concerns across the world. But 1,400 kms away from Kabul there is a whiff of a political opportunity in Lucknow.

Can the Taliban sweep in Afghanistan help BJP in UP polls 2022? Can the extremist Muslim takeover of the country that has mentions in Hindu mythology be a vote spinner for the BJP?

In the Mahabharat mythology, Dhritrashtra's wife Gandhari was the daughter of the King of Gandhara, which is believed to be modern day Kandahar.

This land turning into the Islamic Emirates of Afghanistan once again has potential for the BJP to cash in on the perceived persecution complex of Hindu population. Already there are efforts on to paint Indian Muslims as supporters or sympathisers of the Taliban.

A reported statement by SP UP MP Shafiqur Rehman Barq where he allegedly supported Taliban's coming to power, has the BJP and media in an overdrive. SP has been sought to be painted as a pro-Taliban party...

Barq clarified that he never made any such statement and insisted that he doesn't support Taliban. But the damage was done and Barq has a sedition case slapped on him.

Sedition cases are being filed over posts seen as pro-Taliban. Primetime debates have seen anchors haranguing Muslim panelists asking them to clear their views on Taliban.

All India Muslim Personal Law Board also found itself in the line of media fire after one of its members Sajjad Nomani praised the Taliban for capturing Afghanistan.

The board too tried to clarify that it was an individual's stand and not that of the AIMPLB.

Poet Munawwar Rana has also been booked for suggesting that Taliban might change and for using Valmiki analogy.

Social media space is India is full of hate posts, painting Indian Muslims as Taliban supporters and sympathisers.

Some known critics on the BJP govt comparing Taliban to Hindutva terror back home is also aiding the rightwing narrative of threat to the country from within and outside and is likely to consolidate the BJP's vote bank in UP in the short run and Centre in the long run.
