‘We were caught unawares by sudden monsoon disease outbreaks in UP’

At the peak of the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, Uttar Pradesh was reporting over 300 deaths a day. These numbers have fallen significantly in the state as they have in many parts of India. But now the state is in the grip of various monsoon-related disease outbreaks -- dengue, leptospirosis and scrub typhus among others. How does the state plan to build on its COVID experience to deal with these outbreaks? Is its healthcare system being ramped up for future crises? We interviewed the state’s health and family welfare minister, Jai Pratap Singh, for answers.
